A static (or fixed) IP address is a unique identification number used by your computer to connect to the Internet. It is used by a device to identify itself to and be located by the network.
It is provided by and associated with a specific broadband provider and cannot be moved between providers.
Dynamic IP Addresses
All Virtue’s business broadband options come with a dynamic IP address (a string of digital numbers such as 147.191.100.114) as standard, to identify the device accessing the Internet. Unlike a Static IP, with the Dynamic IP an interruption in the broadband connection may result in a new IP address being allocated.
Why choose Static IP's?
A Static IP address is a sensible choice for growing businesses as it helps to maximise the capacity and robustness or your internet capabilities, such as running your own website, FTP server and remote access.
If you want a computer to be permanently visible on the Internet then a Dynamic IP address would not be suitable.
- Running your own website
- Running your own email server without downtime and associate it to a domain name
- Secure access to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) from PCs to prevent fraudulent access
- Running an FTP server
- Using off site server duplication
- Using security applications such as CCTV
- Needing improved wireless security
- Need less downtime for your devices using remote access
